West Virginia Penitentiary operated as such from
1876 to 1995, but now it's a tactical training facility, and it's open for tours. I was there yesterday for AirsoftCon, and had the opportunity to wander around the old cell block, with no one else around. It was really creepy. Some of the more disturbing things I saw - How painfully small the cells were:
That looks about 5' wide, tops. Really low ceiling, too.
And the gallows:
Um...that's a dummy swingin' there. They do some kind of ghost tour or haunted house thing. I actually wouldn't mind going back to check out one of their tours. I briefly talked to a guy who worked there and he said the place has lots of stories.
